Ramel less severe, landfall likely near Mongla in Bangladesh says IMD

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Remal,' expected to make landfall between Sagardweep in West Bengal and Mangola in Bangladesh at midnight on Sunday. The Alipore Meteorological Department reports that this is the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season, centered about 360 km south-southeast of Khepupara and 350 km south-southeast of Sagardweep. The storm is predicted to bring winds of 110-120 km/h, possibly reaching 135 km/h. Announcements have been made to urge residents to move to safer areas.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the coastal districts of West Bengal on May 26-27, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and potential waves up to 1.5 meters high. Preparations include evacuations by district administrations and suspension of flight operations at Kolkata Airport for 21 hours starting noon Sunday. The National Disaster Response Force has deployed 12 teams, with five on standby. Additionally, the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard are ready for rescue operations. "All central agencies are on full alert to deal with this situation," assured Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba.
